Tourist peak season in FlorIda Keys started right after the holidays in late December and lasted through May. During the winter months, it hardly ever rains, and even if the clouds hit with a little rain, they are gone that day. The subtropical climate of Keys means a comfortable year-round temperature (January high temperatures usually in the '70s), making it a remarkable destination when even Central Florida can experience snow. In summer, when the temperature reaches the heat range (the highest average of July is 86°F), crowds spread slightly and hotels tend to lower prices, which makes it a good time to visit if you are looking for a better offer and don't mind the heat and humidity. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which means the weather is more turbulent and likely a dangerous storm (the peak hurricane months for the Florida Keys are between August 15 and October 15). Its green mile marker sign starts at mile marker 113 on the Miami-Dade/Monroe County line and goes down to marker 0 on Fleming and Whitehead street corners in Key West (a popular photo opportunity). Usually hotels, restaurants, and other sites peg the location to the nearest mile marker (MM). The trip from Miami to Key West usually takes four hours.
Waters around the chain, which covers shallow plains, mangrove islands, and reefs, protected by the Florida Keys National Marine Reserve. The Florida Keys Shipwreck Line connects nine historic undersea shipwrecks and artificial coral reefs from Key Largo to Key West.
Over the years, pensitting Florida Keys has prospered from agriculture, shipwreck rescue, sponge fishing, commercial fishing (the second largest industry in the Keys today) and tourism, the area's main economic driver. Tourism had the earliest boosters in railway baron Henry Flagler who completed the railway in 1912 that connected the Keys to take tourists south, but a storm in 1935 destroyed a segment that was never rebuilt. The Overseas Highway, completed in 1938, became the only way to travel among the Keys on land.
